Mrs. Suhaima Hoosen (University of Durban Westville/House of Light, South Africa) 13.00 - 13.25

Bio-data:
Mrs. Suhaima Hoosen is the Chairperson and Programme Manager for House of Light, dealing specifically in Social Problems. She is the Founder Member and Developer of the House of Light organization radio programmes on issues of Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS and sustainable development of communities. She is also a lecturer in the Department of Social Work University of Durban Westville (12 years).

Topic of Presentation:
Drug and HIV Education - An integrated approach for HIV/AIDS and Substance Abuse prevention for school .

Abstract:
South Africa with its 40 million population is faced with two serious epidemics, HIV/AIDS and Substance Abuse. Mostly children at the most vulnerable stage of their lives are affected by HIV and Substance Abuse. This paper discussed the entry point being the school, as families and communities are being destroyed by AIDS and Substance Abuse. A comprehensive and integrated approach was used, based on a 10-session programme run at local schools.

Bio-data:
Dr. Naila Z. Khan has a PhD in paediatric neurology from the Neurosciences Unit, Institute of Child Health, London, UK. She is also the chairperson of the Shishu Bikash Network, a forum of multidisciplinary professionals from all over Bangladesh, mainly from Child Development and Neurology Centres.

Brother Ronald Drahozal
Brother Ronald Drahozal came to Bangladesh from the USA in 1962 as a teacher. He founded the first Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Bangladesh. He also founded the second Drug Rehabilitation Centre called APON. APON was started as a halfway house for aftercare services for those addicts but increasingly became a primary treatment and rehabilitation centre.

Topic of Presentation:
Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS: Prevention and Control in Bangladesh.

Abstract:
The first part of this paper discussed the state of drug addiction in the country. It highlighted upon the need to address HIV/AIDS in the context of addiction, which so far most agencies including the Bangladesh government have failed to address. The second part of the paper described school programmes for life skills development including prevention of HIV/AIDS and addiction which have been initiated.

HIV/AIDS and Substance Abuse.

Abstract:
It has been observed that there is a consistently increasing HIV trend among the drug users in Mumbai. This paper examined the development of a comprehensive and integrated range of treatment for drug users suffering from HIV.
